It’s officially here! OTR’s favourite month of the year! If we were in the Northern Hemisphere, it would be filled with pumpkin spice lattes, woolly scarves and fall-dedicated Pinterest mood boards. But just because we are a little further south, doesn’t mean this month isn’t jampacked full of fun. (Image: Marlie McNamara)

The arrival of October signals the end of a lot of things: cold weather, Australian football and rugby league seasons, and daylight saving. It’s almost as if the social calendar is preparing for summer, so it’s time to get in quick before the last wintry weather leaves.
Adelaide Fashion Week
Adelaide Fashion Week is headed for Adelaide in early October. During the days our doorstep is graced with runways, showcases, workshops and more, here are just a few of our favourite events to see!
Threaded
This showcase is all about appreciating the designer behind the garment. Hosted by the Piccadilly, Threaded: Adelaide shares the behind-the-scenes of South Australia’s designers, photographers and makers. This event features a documentary screening, live music and community connection. Threaded is on October 7, and tickets are priced at $45. They are available here.
BY JOHNNY – A Fashion Homecoming Runway
Adelaide Town Hall welcomes back Australian label BY JOHNNY for an exclusive and solo catwalk event. This show celebrates and introduces what has been and what is yet to come with reimagined, bold, feminine pieces. It runs on October 8, and tickets are priced at $49. You can find tickets here.
Yakisan NIGHTCHA Party
Yakisan’s rooftop and Japanese garden will hold a night of great music, flowing drinks and mingling with fashion fanatics. It’s a great event to dress up, meet industry icons or simply enjoy the atmosphere with friends. Tickets are priced at $99 and include a complimentary drink and NIGHTCHA snacks. You can purchase them here.
Viktoria & Woods X Christian Kimber — The Sartorialists Runway
These two industry icons, Viktoria & Woods and Christian Kimber, are appreciating the art of fashion in an exclusive runway event that blends modern Australian fashion with quiet style. The dual runway is held at Adelaide Town Hall and is set to be one of the week’s most anticipated shows. This show is on October 10 and tickets are available here.
OzASIA Festival
Simultaneously celebrating 20 years and their last year around Adelaide’s CBD, the OzAsia Festival is back for one last hurrah from October 9. This festival is a staple event and features the Lucky Dumpling Market along the River Torrens, as well as the Weekend of Words, an event dedicated to Asian and Asian Australian writers and thinkers.
There is plenty to see at the OzAsia Festival this year! Find more in the OzAsia program here.
Adelaide Film Festival
A major event for the state, the Adelaide Film Festival is one of the biggest film events in Australia. This festival hosts feature, short films and documentaries, premiering both “emerging and established Australian and global talent”.
Between mingling with the industry, enjoying local and international works and appreciating the art of film, the Adelaide Film Festival deserves a visit.
The festival will be held across a range of Adelaide’s historic cinemas, including the Piccadilly in North Adelaide, the Odeon Star in Semaphore and the Capri Theatre located on Goodwood Road.
Unsure of what to go and see? Here are OTR’s recommendations:
Wild Horse Nine
Wild Horse Nine explores the lead-up to the 1970s Chilean military coup, as two CIA operatives navigate an unpredictable political landscape. John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell lead a stacked cast in this “wickedly funny, sharply observed” film. Tickets can be purchased online. This film premieres on Wednesday, October 14 at 6pm (Capri Theatre) and Tuesday, October 20 at 9pm (Palace Nova East End).
9 Temples to Heaven
In 9 Temples to Heaven, a family navigates grief following a fortune teller’s prediction their elderly grandmother is nearing death. The Thai family set out to visit nine Buddhist temples in a single day and are faced with family squabbles, frustrations and jokes. This film premieres on Friday, October 16 at 4pm (Palace Nova East End) and Thursday, October 22, at 2:30pm (Palace Nova East End).
KUMARANGK: Sacred Women’s Business
This documentary reflects on what is considered “Australia’s most divisive cultural conflicts… the Hindmarsh Island bridge affairs”. Combining archival footage from the 1980s and 1990s with rich character interviews, KUMARANGAK: Sacred Women’s Business travels back in time. Witness South Australian history and the Ngarrindjeri women who navigated the political and cultural landscape of sacred knowledge intersecting with development interests. This film premieres on Saturday, October 17 at 2pm (The Piccadilly) and Tuesday, October 20 at 7pm (Palace Nova East End).
This is only half of what Adelaide has to offer in October. With a long weekend at the very beginning of the month, and some spooky times with Halloween at the end, you’re guaranteed a full social schedule.
